The American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), under the direction of Dr. James Andrews and Dr. William Clancy, is recognized as one of the top Sports Medicine Fellowship programs in the world. The Fellowship emphasized the Arthroscopic treatment of shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and foot & ankle injuries. Many of the surgeries were pioneered at ASMI.
While working with Dr. Andrews, Dr. Joyce evaluated and surgically treated many elite athletes from the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball. As part of the ASMI fellowship society – Dr. Joyce continues to collaborate with both Dr. Andrews and other ASMI fellows to bring the very latest sports medicine and scientific treatments to his patients.

Working with Dr. Clancy, Dr. Joyce was able to spend an entire year with a true pioneer in sports medicine and knee surgery. Dr. Clancy is attributed with the development of the first successful ACL reconstruction in North America. Furthermore, Dr. Clancy discovered the “double bundle PCL Reconstruction,” a procedure that Dr. Joyce was the first to perform in Connecticut in 1995.

Dr. Joyce completed his 4 years of Orthopaedic training at the highly selective Washington University Medical School - Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Ranked by US News and World Report as a Top Ten Orthopaedic Department. This training included all subspecialty areas of Orthopaedic Surgery – (Sports Medicine, Joint Replacement, Foot & Ankle, Hand & Wrist, and Spine.) Over a year was spent at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

National Institutes of Health, NIAMS, Orthopedic Research Unit, Bethseda, MD
Dr. Joyce completed a 2 year fellowship at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). As part of the NIH, the NIAMS has a $500 million dollar budget to study Arthritis and related diseases. During his fellowship, Dr. Joyce did both basic research and clinical research on the healing of bone, tendons and cartilage. That research lead to dozens of publications and national / international presentations. The NIH selects only 2 orthopaedic surgeons for its Intramural Research Fellowship each year. It was during his time at the NIH that Dr. Joyce developed his interest in the care of arthritis patients – especially as they arise following sports injuries.
