Injuries by Sport

While any injury can occur during athletic activity, certain patterns are more common in specific sports. Successful treatment often brings together the athlete, physician, physical therapist, athletic trainer, and coach. The timing and severity of the injury—as well as the athlete’s season and goals—help determine the best course of care.

Dr. Alex G. Dukas, Dr. Christian A. Merrill, and our physical therapy team focus on creating an individualized plan that helps each athlete recover safely and return to activity.

Baseball

The repetitive overhead demands of baseball commonly affect the shoulder and elbow. Conditions may include UCL injuries, rotator cuff problems, and labral tears.

Basketball

Quick changes of direction, pivoting, jumping, and overhead passing can contribute to knee injuries, ankle sprains, and shoulder conditions.

Football

Contact, twisting, and high-impact play can lead to ACL, meniscus, and PCL injuries, shoulder labral and rotator cuff problems, hip conditions, fractures, and sprains.

Gymnastics

Repetitive impact, flexibility demands, and weight-bearing through the arms can place stress on the wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles.

Soccer

Running, cutting, kicking, and player contact commonly affect the knees and ankles and may also cause muscle strains, fractures, and other lower-extremity injuries.

Recreational and Other Sports

We also treat injuries related to running, cycling, skiing, tennis, golf, and other recreational activities. Care is tailored to the demands of your sport and your goals.

Prompt evaluation can help define the injury and guide treatment. Contact Orthopaedic Sports Specialists to schedule an appointment.
